Woman of the Year - Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation
Season 2 EP 17, Woman of the Year

A letter is sent to the parks and recreation department offices from the Pawnee chapter of the Indiana Organization of Women, Leslie automatically assumes that it is a letter of congratulations for winning the Woman of the Year award, but to her surprise and everyone else’s Ron is outlined as the actual recipient of the award in recognition of Leslies achievements. Ron knows that the award is a ridiculous mistake, but he uses the opportunity to mock Leslie. Ron constantly brags about the award in front of Leslie (with hilarious results). In the end Ron admits that the award was a mistake and he was just joking. He tries to recommend Leslie for the Award however the Indiana Organization of Women director that a male (Ron) was chosen on purpose to bring attention to these awards. Unhappy with the organization Leslie and Ron plan on making a speech which criticizes the awards but instead presents the award to Leslie. After the ceremony they both decide the award is meaningless and throw it into the wastebasket, Leslie secretly returns to salvage it. During all this Tom is given the opportunity to invest in the Snakehole Lounge if he can come up with $10,000 to buy a share. Tom reveals that his dream was to be part owner of a club but only has $4,000 so he seeks Jean-Ralphio to contribute the remainder, but he can only fork out $5,000. So Tom asks his co-workers to contribute the remaining $1,000. Donna shows the most interest but immediately withdraws when she meets Jean-Ralphio. Meanwhile, Andy is kicked out of his apartment and April decides to help him look for a new one. But as Andy learns of Toms troubles he immediately gives him the $1,000 sacrificing his apartment.
The concept of the main story with the Woman of the year award going to a male was interesting and bought about funny moments, especially Ron’s photo shoot. The meeting between Jean-Ralphio and Donna to cement her investment really made me laugh. The Andy looking for an apartment wasn’t entertaining at all, which held the episode back. It was an interesting episode with new ideas.

Sweetums - Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation
Season 2 EP 15, Sweetums
DJ Roomba

Sweetums, the local candy company, wants to sponsor the parks department in the hopes that they will be able to sell their new candy snack bar to visitors in the park. Ron supports the deal but Leslie is sceptical after Ann warns her about the unhealthy amount of corn syrup contained within each bar. Leslie Then arranges for a public forum so the community can make a decision on whether to allow Sweetums to sponsor the parks or not. Because of this Ron feels Leslie is infringing on others personal freedoms and is annoyed at her. The forum begins with Sweetum showing the audience footage of great times had with Sweetum products, Leslie responds to this by showing an old film of the former CEO of Sweetums discussing the adverse effects of cornsyrup on cows. In further response to this Sweetums brings in the CEO of Sweetums, who is also the actor in their commercials, and his children Denver and Dakota. They tell the audience to look under their seats to find candy, the excitement of free candy helps Sweetums win the vote in favour of the sponsorship. After the Forum is over Ron apologises to Leslie for being an ass. Meanwhile Tom has to move out of his home after his divorce from Wendy and enlists Mark to help, Mark is reluctant but realises that he has a truck and cannot think of a valid excuse. Donna, April, Jerry and Andy also help Tom (who does no work) move. At the end of the move Tom receives a call warning him of a gas leak at his new home and that he cannot move in until Monday. The department members unwilling to take Toms stuff to their respective homes until Monday dumps his things at the parks department office
Marginally alright episode, the whole Sweetums debacle and process gave almost no laughs. The episode was saved by the departments attempt to help Tom to move. The process in which the crew went through was funny DJ Roomba was a crack up.

The Set Up - Parks and Rec

Parks and Recreation
Season 2 EP 13, The Set Up
Chris securing Leslie in the MRI

We begin the episode by learning that Pawnee is being sued by the previous owners of lot 48, Ann refers Leslie to an old lawyer friend (Justin) of hers to help resolve the issue. Leslie asks Ann to set them up on a date but Ann instead sets her up on a date with a MRI expert that she works with at the hospital named Chris. The date with Chris begins poorly he is disappointed with Leslie as he learns that she is actually a director of regular parks and not amusement parks. Leslie then admits to never having an MRI to which Chris promptly offered to take her to the hospital to receive one. Chris uses this opportunity to access Leslie’s health and whether she is worth future investment (comments about her ‘excellent’ uterus. LOL). Leslie decides Chris is not right for her and takes him home. At the same time Mark confronts Ann about her romantic feelings for Justin accusing her of saving him for herself. Mark asks Andy to confirm his suspicions of Ann infatuation. Andy also confronts Ann who then realises she is wrong and eventually sets Leslie up with mark. In a sub plot Ron looks for a personal assistant to protect him from having to deal with citizens due to a new policy requiring officials to interact more with the public. Tom offers his services to help find the perfect assistant. The person Tom picks Jean-Ralphio resembles Tom causing Ron to dislike him right away. April eventually volunteers for the job wanting to remain at the department after her internship finishes so she can spend more time with Andy.
The episode was reasonably entertaining Will Arnett guest starring as the rubbish date was brilliant. He made the horrible date even greater by the way he portrayed his character. The chemistry with Leslie worked perfectly.  Some parts of the episode were dull especially when Mark and Ann were watching the movie together (their portrayal of Marley and Me wasn’t so great either)

Parks and Recreation Christmas Special

Parks and Recreation
Season 2 EP 12, Christmas Scandal

The Annual Pawnee City Government Follies are upon us and the parks department are the opportunity to perform sketches that make fun of that year’s ‘goings on’ in Pawnee politics, including a sketch where they made fun of councilman Dexhart’s sex scandals. After the performance Leslie is asked to join Dexhart for lunch, Where she learns one of her sketches was bizarrely accurate of another scandal that has not been made public yet. After the meeting she discovers that local newspaper has snapped pictures of them together and is reporting her as Dexhart’s new mistress. The rumours upset Leslie, distracting from her work. Ron offers to give Leslie a day off, distributing all her tasks between him and the rest of the staff who realise the large amount of work she does and the group struggle to get things done. Leslie decides to have lunch with Dave, who reveals he has to go to San Diego as his unit in the army reserve has been called up. He asks Leslie to join him who is reluctant, yet she wants to escape the local media. Ann brings Dexhart to her house for Leslie to confront him and demand he clears her name. Dexhart refuses as this new scandal covers up the real scandal which is much better for him. A photo was taken of the meeting in Anns house, resulting in further speculation that Leslie and Ann are actually lesbian lovers in a three way relationship with Dexhart. Furious, Leslie appears on “Pawnee Today” to clear her name. Dexhart appears as a surprise guest who tries to prove the relations are real claiming she has a mole on her rear end. Leslie counters by pulling down her pants on live television to show she has no mole hence the end of the scandal. Afterwards Leslie tells Dave she is not going to join him in San Diego.
This episode wasn’t quite as funny as the others, bored me in a couple of places in fact. I’ve come to realise that Christmas specials aren’t quite as good as they are hyped up to be, most just bore your socks off while packing in Christmas decorations in the background.

Parks and Rec

Parks and Recreation
Season 2 EP 10, Hunting Trip

Ron is planning the annual ‘trail survey’ for the boys of the office, which is just a secret hunting trip. Leslie, wanting to be one of the guys insists that the ladies be allowed to attend the hunting trip as well as Tom as he is never invited. During the hunting trip Leslie gets the first quail. Ron, being quite frustrated with the trip challenges Leslie to see who can shoot more birds. After a while of hunting Ron is shot in the head by an unknown person, the others rush over to him, luckily Ann is a nurse and the injury isn’t too serious. The others discuss who shot Ron, Mark suggests that they are being hunted causing a minor panic in the group. Leslie takes the blame when the park ranger arrives (who was hilariously sexist). In the end Tom comes forward for shooting Ron. During all this April is asked to check a budget request while the department is gone, but is put on hold for hours. Andy arrives to hang out and the two begin to bond in a strange way.
This episode bored me at times but the sexist park ranger made up for it. A decent time waster.

More Parks and Recreation

The Murinal
Parks and Recreation
Season 2 EP 9, The Camel

A Mural in the Pawnee town hall called the 'Spirit of Pawnee' has been repeatedly vandalized due to its discriminatory depictions (Hilarious Mural), so the city council decided to have it replaced. Each Department is asked to come up with a new idea for a mural. After taunts by the sewer department, Leslie became determined for her department to win. She orders each person in the parks department to come up with a concept for the mural, with comedic results (Jerry’s misuse of the word ‘murinal’ afforded a few giggles). When asked to vote for the concept for the department to propose, everyone votes for themselves posing further problems. As a result Leslie makes a mural comprising of bits from everyone’s artwork but the outcome was unsuccessful. Leslie as a last resort drags Mark in to help who creates a mural which he believes will win although it’s a bit dull. Everyone else is against Marks mural, but Leslie enters it anyway so they can win. While waiting for the sketch presentation, Leslie sees the fun other departments had putting together their far worse off murals, this changes her mind and she enters the department’s original mural. The council is confused by the mural and in the end decide it would be more cost effective to not spend money on a new mural but rather rename the old mural ‘The Diversity Express’. In a side plot Ron is surprised at Andy’s ability to ease the pain from his bunion during a shoe shine. Ron returns continuously looking to calm the pain, at first Andy is happy to see him but then it grows uncomfortable for Andy when Ron moans in pleasure during a shoe shine, both then become uncomfortable and try to avoid each other. In the end both men decide it best if they both pretended it didn’t happen.
Another solid episode in the series the concept mural deliberation really made me laugh out loud ‘murinal’, Jerry is turning into a great character.
